September 2002 Carolyn Utter, Editor The aroma is unforgettable and the taste is addictive. Wake up all you chileheads out there! It's time for fresh, roasted chile peppers from the chile chompers at Johnson's Garden Centers! We've imported a touch of the Southwest at Johnson's with professional chile roasters and fresh chile from Hatch, New Mexico. Whether you prefer a mild green chile flavor or you always head straight for the hot stuff, we have peppers that will light up your taste buds. Choose from mild, medium ('Big Jim' variety purchased from Big Jim himself) and hot chile peppers depending on your pepper tolerance. If you've always relied on green chile in a can (something no respectable chilehead would ever consider) you have a treat in store when you use fresh roasted green chile in your favorite Southwestern recipes. Use roasted peppers and sauces for chile rellenos, breakfast burritos, enchiladas, tamales, huevos rancheros and more! Is it chile or chili? Debates are quite heated (no pun intended) but for the true connoisseurs in New Mexico, chile is the pepper and chili is the soup made from ground beef, beans and spices. Another fiery debate is whether more than one chile is "chiles" or "chile." We've wrestled with that one, but not wanting to appear out of touch we have sided with some of our favorite chileheads and always refer to multiples as "chile." Here are some other chilehead terms you might want to learn: Chile flashes--sweating at the brow after eating a hot pepper. This hot flash has nothing to do with your age or gender! Hotluck--a potluck dinner centered on chile dishes. Chile fix--one's daily dose of the addictive chile pepper. We're roastin' chile at all three Johnson's Garden Center locations every Friday, Saturday and Sunday (and maybe a day or two in-between depending on our supply of fresh peppers).
