With all the cool, moist conditions of the past few weeks, the weeds in our gardens have really started to grow. I can remember one of my first jobs at the Garden Center as a youth was to pull weeds. This is a great way to rid your garden of weeds, but it takes a while. I think that Mom and Dad had a good reason to keep their kids busy pulling weeds, but that's another story. You can control weeds easily by using Hi-Yield KILL-ZALL Weed & Grass Killer. It kills anything it touches, so take care not to get the spray on desired plants. When the weeds are dead, apply American Brand Weed & Grass Stopper to prevent more weeds from germinating. BAGWORMS Be on the lookout for those pesky bagworms. They can devour your favorite juniper or spruce in no time. Use ferti-lome Ornamental & Evergreen Spray or American Brand Thuricide to control those insects when first noticed. GRUBWORMS Grubworms are now appearing in our turf areas. Merit is the best product to use this early in the season. Products such as Hi-Yield Diazinon and Hi-Yield Dylox work best later in the summer (July and August). PRUNING You can lightly prune flowering shrubs when they are through flowering. This will encourage new growth, which will produce flower buds for next year. Do not prune summer-flowering shrubs such as Crapemyrtle and Rose of Sharon now because the flower buds are just about ready to open. Feed all shrubs lightly with ferti-lome Tree & Shrub Food to keep the leaves a dark, healthy green. LAWN CARE Fertilize any turf grass now with ferti-Lome South-West Green Maker for a slow release form of nitrogen and also a shot of iron and sulfur. This product will keep your lawn looking good for about a month.
