Johnsons's Garden Centers Text File document - copyright 2002 PDF file available at http://www.johnsonsgarden.com/newsletter/kidsgardening.html Gardening with Kids June 2001 Jan Decker, Junior Gardeners' Club Coordinator With school coming to an end, now would be a great time to start a summer gardening project with your kids. Whatever project is decided upon, help ensure success by starting with proper soil preparation (Johnson's Soil Recipe) and quality plants or seeds. For added fun and learning be sure to have the kids keep a journal of the project from start to finish. Bigger may not always be better, but monster plants, like giant sunflowers and pumpkins, do generate excitement. So É we are having a contest for Johnson's Junior Gardeners to see who can grow the largest pumpkin! Kids can use the coupon found in the May issue of Johnson's Junior Gardeners' Club newsletter for free pumpkin seeds and to register for the contest. If your kids aren't on the mailing list, they can get a copy of the newsletter in the store and sign up now! Pumpkins will germinate in about ten days and take 3 to 4 months to mature. The weigh-in and judging for other categories will take place in mid October. For more information, check future issues of the Junior Gardeners' Club newsletter.
