Hello, again!
I’ve always said that there is no other time of the year that our greenhouses are showing as much color as during the Christmas poinsettia season, and this year is no exception. Traditionally our greenhouses are filled with red and white poinsettias, but as plant breeders have been busy getting us new options for our gardens, they have also been providing us with many new colorful options for the holiday season. Here are a few poinsettia options besides red and white that we have to brighten your home or office.
Princettia Queen Shell Pink Poinsettia is a perfect mid-sized plant, and more compact than a standard poinsettia. It's a breakthrough for those who love the brilliant hues, but want a plant with big, showy bracts in clear pink that make a real statement. It's the ideal choice for creating a stunning, high-impact display anywhere in your home.
Red Ribbons Poinsettia is what I have on my desk and end table at home. A true poinsettia innovation with uniquely-shaped bracts and leaves. This new variety is easy to grow with low to medium vigor. Its free-branching variety provides a florist-type quality on a compact plant. With its oak leaf bracts and bold red color, it is perfect to use with foliage combinations or as a standalone novelty.
Sparkling Rogue Poinsettia, with its bold, bright and beautiful bracks, it dazzles in a unique blend of pink and red hues, creating a festive splash wherever it’s placed. It's ideal for adding sparkle to holiday decor, and one of my favorites.
Jingle Bells Poinsettia is a regular at the greenhouses, and the first to feature rich red bracts speckled with pink and creamy white. Poinsettias have flower bracts that are often mistaken for flower petals because of their groupings and colors, but bracts are actually modified leaves.
Quad Color Poinsettia is a mix of pink, white, red and variegated all in one pot for a spectacular showing in the home. Lime Poinsettia is another new one for us at Johnson’s. It is as unique as it sounds, contrasting with all the colors of the season.
Tapestry Poinsettia has gray green leaves edged in yellow and the cherry-red bracts of Holly Point poinsettia, but with much more vigor. Tapestry is not as tall as the average red cultivar making for a nice, compact plant for the holiday season.
Norwin Orange Poinsettia has a true glowing, vivid orange color and traditional premium-shaped bracts. To top that off, it is one to last well after the first of the year as it’s a ‘late bloomer’.
Cinnamon Poinsettia has bright orange-peach colored bracts that are flecked with pink, especially at the edges. Each bract has a variable amount of pink color. From a distance this plant appears golden – a ‘designer’ color to compliment the reds of the season.
I’ll frequently get asked how to care for poinsettias not only during the season, but well into the new year. First of all, when you select a poinsettia (and any other tender plant) from Johnson’s, we are almost fanatical about wrapping the plant to get it home without being damaged by the cold weather. Poinsettias do not like to be chilled whatsoever. Once home, give the plant as much indirect light as possible and keep the plant evenly moist and not overwatered (no standing water). Watering two or three times a week should be adequate.
Now is a good time to shop for all of your Christmas needs at Johnson’s. Christmas decor is now 25% off including fresh cut Christmas trees, greenery and more! While you are in the store for your poinsettia or Christmas finishing touches, enjoy a cup of Aspen Mulling Spices, a tradition at Johnson’s for years.
Happy Holidays!
