Fall Nursery Sale: 25% Off Trees, Shrubs & Perennials.
Hello, again!
Fall is for planting! The cooler temperatures make it a great time to plant - as does our Fall Tree, Shrub & Perennial Sale. Not only is our selection great right now, but it's nice to see fall color before you choose.
Also as nighttime temperatures dip, it’s a reminder that cooler days are just around the corner. That means it’s time not only to plant spring-flowering bulbs but also to prepare our tropical houseplants that have spent the summer outdoors. While we can’t truly “winterize” houseplants for Kansas, there are a few steps we can take to help them thrive indoors through the colder months.
Keeping pests out is key to successfully bringing plants inside. Hi-Yield Systemic Insect Granules provide long-lasting protection. Simply sprinkle the granules on the soil, lightly mix them in and water. The roots absorb the systemic insecticide and move it throughout the plant, providing up to two months of control.
Before bringing plants indoors, I also like to give them a thorough spray with ferti-lome Indoor/Outdoor Multi-Purpose Insect Spray. It controls many common houseplant pests and continues working for up to four weeks. It’s also great to use around the house in fall and winter when spiders and crickets try to move indoors.
The ferti-lome Houseplant Hero line makes it easy to keep all types of houseplants - cacti, African violets, orchids, and foliage plants - healthy and growing indoors. You can use Houseplant Hero All-Purpose Houseplant Food every time you water, or once or twice a month for consistent results. For long-term nutrition, mix in ferti-lome Garden Cote when repotting. This time-release fertilizer feeds plants for up to six months, activated by moisture and soil temperature. Its balanced nutrients and micronutrients encourage stronger growth and more blooms. Even during the colder months, indoor plants benefit from regular feeding.
While you’re preparing your plants for winter, take a look at the roots. If you see roots circling inside the pot, it’s time to repot. Move up just one pot size - too large, and it’s easy to overwater. Always use a premium potting mix like ferti-lome Ultimate Potting Mix. It’s our best all-purpose mix for superior performance indoors or out. Ultimate Potting Mix provides excellent water retention without fillers and works beautifully for tropical plants, flowers, vegetables, seedlings and hanging baskets.
With a little attention now - pest control, feeding and fresh soil - your plants will stay healthy and vibrant all winter long, ready to move back outdoors next spring.
