Hello, again!

Chatting with my friend Meteorologist Frank Waugh from KAKE recently, I heard we had our first freeze of the season on Sunday, November 2, and our Monday morning temperatures around 20 degrees would have been our first killing freeze with several hours of below freezing temperatures. It was nice getting a hard freeze to put our plants to rest for the winter. With the leaf fall from the Sweet Gum and other deciduous trees, I've been mowing regularly to keep the leaves chopped up to break down into valuable nutrients for the turf area. Applying ferti-lome Humic helps break down leaves and other organics in lawn and landscape areas. Here are a few projects to be done now that my gardening activities have slowed down:

Planting - I still have some of my spring flowering bulbs and winter hardy pansies to plant at home, which can be done in cooler weather.

Fertilizing - Just as we winterize our turf areas with ferti-lome Winterizer, our landscape plants can use a late fall feeding as well. Tree and Shrub Food from ferti-lome is the ideal product, with its balanced fertilizer and trace elements. Tree and Shrub Food can be applied under the canopy of trees and shrubs with no digging required, just apply on the surface and water it in. I also like to use ferti-lome Gardener’s Special to fertilize in perennial and bulb areas at this time of year.

Weed Control - Fall is a good time to control weeds in not only our turf areas, but landscape beds as well. Hi-Yield Killzall Quick is a non-selective systemic weed and grass killer that will get rid of nearly all vegetation, roots and all. It's non-selective, so we recommend using a piece of cardboard to shield desired plants. Killzall Quick is rainproof in 10 minutes, and reaches the roots in 1 to 2 hours. Once the weeds are dead, use Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper with Dimension to prevent weeds in sensitive landscape, such as warm season established lawns and ornamental landscapes.

Sapling Control - Naturalized trees that have grown voluntarily can get out of hand in just a couple of years. Mulberry, ailanthus, cottonwood and others can reach overhead before you know it. Brush Killer Stump Killer from ferti-lome is an easy remedy, with a ready-to-use brush in the cap. Brush Killer Stump Killer is made to combat stump and vine regrowth after cutting. This pro tip will save you much effort later on.

I hope you stopped by the garden centers last weekend for our Christmas Open House. The stores look spectacular! Our holiday greenery for decorating and Christmas trees will be arriving over the next week or so! Be sure to stop by next weekend for a great selection of not only Fraser firs from North Carolina, but also Concolor firs from New Mexico and noble firs from the Pacific Northwest. We're here to help you get ready for the holidays!
