We have all done it, touching our eyes when we are cooking with Hatch green chile peppers. We soon remember why we should be wearing gloves and not rubbing our eyes! Capsaicin is what causes the ‘burn’. It is in the membrane that holds the seeds in peppers. Nature does wonders in the spreading and propagation of new plants! While capsaicin is the compound that causes irritation to mammals - including humans - it does not irritate birds. Birds are able to eat hot peppers and spread the seeds naturally. Because of this natural occurrence, we’ve figured out that by adding capsaicin to bird feed, mammals - namely squirrels - are repelled from eating the heat-infused bird food.
We’ve brought in a new line of bird food from Mr. Bird. Also, this Sunday we’ll be hosting our Juniper Grafting Workshop. If you've ever wanted to know how to create a side-veneer graft, join me! Each participant will graft their own Juniperus virginiana 'Taylor'. Workshop includes root stock, juniper scion, grafting knife, binding, sealant, pot, and soil. We will tend your grafted juniper until it is ready to plant in the spring.
