Last Weekend: Johnson's Spring Open House Sale.

Hello, again!

'PAX N' RELAX' was a great marketing campaign that we put on in the early 1970's. The PAX Fertilizer Company used this promotion to sell their PAX line of crabgrass preventers. The 'PAX N' RELAX' tagline pretty much said it all. Use PAX in the spring and then relax for the remainder of the year; no need to deal with crabgrass in your lawn. I remember our stores' take on the promotion with our display that included a hammock and a mannequin dressed up like my Dad, Harold Johnson, by the display of PAX. The display even won us a color TV from PAX. It was exciting to watch our first color TV at home!

Our friend and supplier Bob Wise from Gard'N-Wise also came up with a local promotion where we could pass out loaded winning dice to customers. The idea was that they would have a "no gamble" guarantee when using PAX crabgrass preventers. As you can see, crabgrass prevention has always been a popular topic, especially this time of year!

Well, we don't offer PAX anymore with their fun promotions, but we do have the next generation of crabgrass preventers with ferti-lome - where you really can RELAX after a spring application. For All Seasons Crabgrass and Weed Preventer will help kill newly germinated weeds for most of the growing season; resulting in a weed-free lawn. Now is a perfect time to apply For All Seasons. I also like to put an application of Hi-Yield Turf and Ornamental Weed and Grass Stopper (without fertilizer) on in mid-summer for continued weed control into the fall season.

If you're looking for a quick broadleaf weed killer, try ferti-lome Weed Free Zone RTS with its easy-to-apply bottle that attaches directly to your garden hose. Weed Free Zone is our quickest working broadleaf weed killer, and it's strong enough to kill mature weeds in your lawn. It controls over 80 of the toughest-to-control broadleaf weeds including clover, bindweed, chickweed, dandelion, henbit, poison ivy, and wild onion.

To sum it up, if you want a ‘no gamble’ way to be able to ‘PAX N’ RELAX’ this summer, come in and visit with our knowledgeable staff to get your lawn healthy and strong this spring!

P.S. Walking through the nursery this week, I found lots of new plants for your landscape: trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, vegetable and herb plants. While there is a concern about water use and drought-limited watering, by planting smartly, such as using soil amendments and mulch at planting time, we can greatly reduce the water requirements of new plants.
