Never jump into a pile of leaves with a wet sucker.

Hello, again!

And just like that, it’s over! A bit of frost over the weekend and my coleus looks like lettuce when the refrigerator has been set too cold. It’s always a little sad to see the tender annuals when we get the first killing frost. My vinca, coleus, and peppers in containers are all done for the year. The good thing is that it tells me it’s time to finish up winterizing the lawn, and it's time to plant spring flowering bulbs and winter hardy pansies.

Another outdoor task that I like to do in the fall is to spray Hi-Yield Killzall Extended Control. Being a pre- and post-emergent weed killer, it kills established weeds and prevents weed germination for up to 6 months! Killzall Extended is non-selective, so it's formulated to kill all vegetation. Use near fences, on paths, patios, curbs, sidewalks, driveways, around trees, shrubs, flower beds, and buildings. Weeds will wilt in a matter of days, with a complete kill of most weeds in 1 to 2 weeks. Because Killzall is a non-selective weed control, it's very important to keep it off desirable plants, grasses, and vegetation or areas where you plan to plant.

It’s time for another application of ferti-lome Winterizer on my fescue lawn. K-State recommends 2-3 applications in the fall, each at least 30 days apart. Winterizer for Established Lawns by ferti-lome is formulated to protect, nourish, and strengthen grass roots during the winter months. Applied in fall, Winterizer will pay dividends in the spring when your lawn is healthier and more disease-resistant - even after a long, cold winter. (Are you hearing rumors too?) Trees, shrubs, ornamental plants, and evergreens will also benefit from a fall application of Winterizer.

Equally important is fertilization of trees and shrubs in the landscape. Trees and shrubs really shine when fertilized twice a year with ferti-lome Tree & Shrub Food! There's no need to dig holes - simply spread this easy, permeating fertilizer around the tree or bush drip line and water in. Every tree and shrub you've planted is an investment. Fall is the most important time to take care of them with Tree & Shrub food.

While I’m outside finishing up garden tasks, it’s time to start decorating for the holidays. Our stores have been busy transforming into magical Christmas Shops, ready to help the host with finished or DIY decor. Stop by today or during our Christmas Open House, coming next weekend. See you soon!
