New Fall Workshops & Pansy Mania Days (last weekend!)
Hello, again!
Finally, over an inch of rainfall in our area! While visiting with friends last night on our TimbukTuesday bike ride, the conversation of fall lawn seeding came up. They were thinking it was too late to seed this fall, but I encouraged my friends to seed as soon as possible. I mentioned that I still have seeding to do, and the addition of the recent rainfall really helps. While the seed won’t be germinating in a couple days as it would have a month ago, I’m confident the newly planted seeds will germinate quickly. I assured my friends that in a week they’ll start seeing the emerging new grass blades appear.
We have grass seed news! We’ve worked with top-tier grass seed suppliers to create what we believe will be a superior new tall fescue blend for our region. Using our decades of turf growing experience in the Wichita area, we've created Johnson's Blue Ribbon Tall Fescue Blend Grass Seed, keeping performance, the environment and value in mind. Our A-List (Alliance for Low Input Sustainable Turf) certified seed blend is made of drought-resistant and heat-tolerant fescue turf varieties that together have all the traits of an excellent lawn. It requires less watering than lawns of the past. It produces a healthier lawn, requiring less fertilizer, chemicals and pesticides.
Johnson's Blue Ribbon Blend performs well in sun or shade and is quick to green up in the spring. Most importantly, it contains 0.00% weed seed. The seed we include is evaluated by the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) where testing is performed regionally to ensure high performance in our area.
Here are the varieties in the blend:
Dynamite is a fall standout for turfgrass quality. Enhanced with Lateral Spread (LS) technology, Dynamite G-LS produces rapidly establishing, quick tillering plants that are perfect for shade and sod production. It stands up to tough diseases like Pythium Blight and Grey Leaf Spot (G). Dynamite makes fewer clippings, resulting in less mowing over time, and has outstanding fall color and density.
Firecracker is a breakthrough tall fescue cultivar, combining Lateral Spread (LS) toughness with the first NTEP proven resistance to Gray Leaf Spot (G). Firecracker G-LS sets a new standard for durability thanks to its aggressive recovery and density, which allows it to shine in summer’s heat and resist diseases that take out other fescue grasses.
Titanium exemplifies the perfect high quality turfgrass; it’s dark green, very dense and has excellent wear tolerance. In addition, it’s very drought tolerant, keeping its great looking appearance late into the summer, even under less-than-ideal conditions. Titanium (var.) is also able to grow successfully in soil that has low fertility, with its aggressive lateral-spread ability.
Stealth is a fescue with parents that were selected for quick, aggressive establishment, great recovery from summer heat and disease, and the ability to be low-mowed. Stealth has a desirable fine texture and scored high in the NTEP for turf quality in our region.
Fertilization is important in the establishment of tall fescue in the fall. Kansas State University recommends a high nitrogen fertilizer in the fall. We recommend ferti-lome Winterizer applied a month after seeding and again a month later. Winterizer is specially formulated to protect, nourish, and strengthen grass roots during the winter months. Applied in fall, Winterizer for Established Lawns will pay dividends in the spring when your lawn is healthier and more disease-resistant - even after a long, cold winter. Trees, shrubs, ornamental plants, and evergreens will also benefit from a fall application of Winterizer.
If you have any questions about overseeding, drought stress, or anything fall lawn care, we’re here to help. Just ask!
