One year's seeding makes seven years' weeding.

Hello, again!

What a fall it has been for planting. With the exception of the hail storm that came through on September 3rd that took out my tomatoes and newly seeded fescue, we’ve had fantastic conditions for getting plants established this fall. No early frosts, adequate moisture, cooler temperatures - all reasons why fall is certainly for planting. But with these ideal conditions, undesirable plants - weeds - also establish in the fall, both in turf and landscape beds.

As cooler weather settles in, lawns and landscapes across Kansas are slowing their growth, but fall is one of the most important seasons for weed control. Taking action now helps eliminate existing weeds and prevents new ones from sprouting, setting your lawn and garden up for success next spring.

For established lawns, identify whether you’re dealing with broadleaf weeds or grassy weeds. Most of our grassy weeds are best controlled in early spring. But during fall, broadleaf weeds such as dandelions, henbit and clover are getting established. When a herbicide is applied now, it moves down into the root system, providing far more effective control than a spring application when the plants are established. If untreated, these weeds will store nutrients to survive the winter and thrive in the spring.

Broadleaf weeds respond well now to selective post-emergent herbicides like ferti•lome Weed Free Zone, which is effective during cool fall temperatures. Apply on a calm day when highs reach above 50°F, and avoid mowing for a couple of days before and after treatment for best results.

Alongside weed control, keep mowing at a moderate height and fertilize with ferti•lome Winterizer in late fall. Weed Out Plus Lawn Fertilizer from ferti-lome can be used as a winterizer for the lawn and control for established and seedling broadleaf weeds as well. A healthy, dense lawn naturally resists weed encroachment.

In landscape beds, use a non-selective herbicide such as Hi-Yield Killzall to spot-treat existing weeds, being careful to protect nearby shrubs and perennials from drift. Once weeds are removed, apply Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper to prevent new weeds from sprouting. Refreshing mulch to a 2–3” depth will further suppress weed growth and conserve moisture.

For driveways, gravel paths, or other bare areas, long-term options like Hi-Yield Killzall Extended Control help keep both broadleaf and grassy weeds from returning for several months.
