Photos with The Grinch THIS Weekend at Johnson's!

Hello, again!

The four seasons that we enjoy not only in Kansas, but all across the country are behind many of our traditions. I had an Instagram post come up this week on a Christmas tree tradition that I’d never seen before. It was tossing your cut Christmas tree into a swimming pool for a day or so to rehydrate the tree! This may work in warm climates, but I don’t think it will work in our region. Maybe the YMCA will allow it, but I don’t think so.

While taking the tree for a swim may not be something we need to do (our Christmas trees are fresh cut), we do observe other traditions such as coloring Easter eggs, wearing green for St. Pat’s, playing April Fool’s pranks (ask my daughter) and wearing patriotic attire on July 4th.

A tradition that is popular in the northern part of the country is displaying porch pots. It’s something we’ve adopted as well. In the 1950s in northern Minnesota, landscape companies were looking for a source of work to keep their employees working into the cold months. With spruce as one of the dominant tree species in the region, the workers would go into the bogs and harvest spruce tops or tips and sell them as tabletop Christmas trees in the region. By the 1960s, over half a million tops were sold throughout the US and Europe.

Today, our stores carry many different species of evergreen foliage for holiday decoration. From pine to cedar, spruce and even variegated boxwood, the choices are almost endless on what can be created by combining different colors and textures. Our Greenery Shop includes other natural accents, such as birch logs, holly, pussy willow stems, and berries. The resulting fresh evergreen wreaths and porch pots are colorful pieces that will be nice for the holidays and throughout the winter months.

Another seasonal tradition that has been going on for years at the stores are our holiday workshops. With a shorter season between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, it’s a great way to gather friends or family and start a new holiday tradition. Stop in, or better yet sign up on our website. Or get 10 or so friends together, and we’ll host your own special time for a workshop. Just give us a call. If you don’t have time in your schedule to attend a workshop this season, we have a wide assortment of premade wreaths and porch pots to grab and go.

Enjoy the start of the holiday traditions!
