The Best Summer Plant Deal: Johnson's Fill-A-Box Sale
Hello, again!
Over the years, I've heard numerous stories from past employees about how they enjoyed their time at the garden center. Many of these stories are from people who had their first jobs working for Johnson's in their teens. Many youth from West Side Christian Church worked for Orie back in the early days of our company. Our uncle Merle frequently tells a story about a dozen boys picking tomatoes for the market. Naturally, horseplay ensued, and rotten tomatoes went flying, one toward someone on a bike riding down St. Paul. The unsuspecting victim decided to take care of business, got off his bike, and headed toward the guilty boy (probably Don Hunt, Ken Cable, or even Merle). At which point the entire dozen boys had to chase him off!
The stories this garden center could tell are endless. I always hear how work ethic was instilled in employees at a young age at our store. One of the first jobs assigned to my dad was making boxes for customers' plant purchases. Deciding beer trays were too much trouble to acquire, Dad bought flat cardboard trays that required stapling the corners. We had a foot-operated stapler that would forcefully staple the box together as fast as one could fold and move the tray. You can imagine how many hands got stapled! Since then, we've moved on to pre-made trays. No more stapling or related injuries, just fold and go.
We've decided to use these boxes now for a 'Fill-A-Box' deal! It's like a 1-trip buffet at Jason's Deli. Place all the annuals, herbs, or small perennials you can fit into the tray, and take them all home for $20! We have a fresh crop of plants from our production greenhouses to choose from, so hurry in while the selection is good, now through July 31.
I'm always glad to see young people move on from the garden center into careers in horticulture and other fields. We've had business owners, architects, doctors, lawyers, mechanics, recording artists, ministers, counselors, psychologists, accountants, financial planners, teachers, coaches, and even competitors get their start at the garden center. It's been very satisfying to watch people grow in their careers.
