Don't pick up houseplant hitchhikers and other advice.

Hello, again!

What temperatures did you see this morning at your place? I saw 30 degrees in Wichita on KAKE-TV Good Morning Kansas. It may have dipped down a bit lower though; up north of town in the open space, my car showed 27 degrees. My tender plants away from the house definitely looked a bit sad with the cold temperatures. It’s about time though, and now I can finish planting my spring flowering bulbs, hardy pansies and violas. They love the cool temperatures and will give us three seasons of color. Our fall garden mums and pansies are on sale now just in time for fall color!

My tropical foliage plants that are close to the house made it through fine with the cooler temperatures. Those mid 20’s, though, we’ll see soon and most tropicals won’t survive those temperatures even in a sheltered spot.

For the plants that I’m wanting to keep for next year, I’ll repot them using ferti-lome Ultimate Potting Mix. I always do my repotting outside where it’s easier to clean up any spilled potting mix. I like Ultimate Potting Mix because it's built for optimum water retention, without cheap fillers, and I can add my own fertilizer suited to the plant I’m potting.

I also like to use Hi-Yield Systemic Insect Granules because they're the perfect way to provide long-lasting insect protection. Just sprinkle the granules on the soil, mix and water in, and the roots will absorb this systemic insecticide and move it through the entire plant.

Another product I like to keep around is Indoor Outdoor Multi-Purpose Insect Spray from ferti-lome. It's perfect for use in the fall and winter when insects like spiders and crickets come inside, and is very effective and labeled for controlling insects on houseplants. Jeremy recommends putting a trash bag over houseplants and spraying inside the bag to fumigate any insects that are wanting to come inside with your plants. Leave the bag on for 10-15 minutes before removing.

ferti-lome’s family of Houseplant Hero liquid plant foods are easy to use and with several formulas for foliage, succulents, orchids or African violets, there’s one made just for any plant’s needs.

Even with the cooler temperatures, it’s still a great time to plant trees, shrubs and perennial plants outside. They’re also on sale now, but stop in while the selection is at its peak. See you soon!
