If birds did not believe in their ability to fly, the sky would be empty.
Have you ever been to the store and struggled to pick up only what you really needed? With so many choices, it can be overwhelming! Well, we had a similar experience several years ago when we looked over our wild bird food selection. We had so many options for birders to feed their winged visitors, like black oil sunflower seeds, nyjer seed, finch mixes, various blends, and suet cakes. We had a lot, and still do, but the one thing we really wanted was missing!
One thing these feeds all have in common is the high fat content that birds require. The other thing in common with many of the feeds is that the seeds are complete, meaning that they come with a shell covering the meat of the seed. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it means the birds must crack the shell to get food. The downside is that you are paying for something that ends up as waste. It drops to the ground making a mess that needs to be cleaned up. Whatever seed that falls on the ground may also germinate and need to be controlled.
So we decided in that bird food brainstorming session that we needed something better. You might remember that's when we created our custom seed mix that we carried for several years. When we were no longer able to get our custom mix, we searched high and low for something just as good. That's what we do - we're avid gardeners, bird watchers, plant parents, etc. We use the products we carry, and quality is important to us!
We're now carrying Shell-less Select Wild Bird Food. It contains no shells, so there's no mess, no waste, and no seed germination. It contains hulled sunflower seed, millet, peanuts and pistachio. It can be used in all types of feeders, attracting all your songbirds. We're very happy with this selection (and so are the birds!)
Besides feeding with Shell-less Select, you'll attract so many birds if you provide them with fresh water, especially during cold spells. The best way to do this is with a Bird Bath De-Icer. We also highly recommend our Platform Bird Feeders because they're easy to fill and keep clean. This year, also consider planting a variety of plants to attract birds and give them shelter in the garden at the same time.
If you haven't yet, stop by the stores and check out the new goods from Florida. Our greenhouses are filling up with fresh plants from miniatures, perfect for dish gardens, to tall plants, for an impeccable tropical sun room.
