It has to be a pretty nice tie to still be around in 30 years.

Hello, again!

We’ve talked before about the fresh cut Christmas trees that come to us from Cimarron, New Mexico near Philmont Scout Ranch. Well, this past week as the temperatures fell, I found my old Italian Vasque hiking boots that I received as a gift the Christmas before Jeremy and I were set to take our scout trip to Philmont over 30 years ago. Seeing these old, weathered boots reminded me of what my Dad, Harold, always used to say, “First class costs very little.” Now, while he would never actually fly first class, the meaning in his message was that buying something of quality is always worth the extra investment if you can manage it. Just like my boots. I know they weren’t the lowest price on the shelf, but they’ve lasted for decades - creating adventure-filled memories over the years.

Maybe you have that old pocket knife from your Grandfather - engraved with his initials, with a blade that is curved from so many sharpenings. Or a special ring that was your Great Aunt’s with whom you share your middle name. Gifts like this are typically made from quality materials, and were meant to be shared with generations to come. I still have my favorite garden tool from 30 years ago, a pair of Swiss-made Felco pruners. They cost about as much as a nice meal out, but they’ll be the last pair of pruners I’ll ever own. I know any gardener would cherish these for decades.

This Christmas season, consider a generational gift for your loved ones. Are your kids grown and starting families of their own? Maybe they’d love a Fontanini Nativity starter set for their mantle that they can add a new piece to each year. They’re almost indestructible, and they tell the Christmas story in a unique way.

For the plant lover in your family, surprisingly, Christmas cacti can be generational. I hear stories of families who have Grandma’s Christmas cactus that still blooms every holiday season! We have an array of other gift-worthy Christmas plants like amaryllis, poinsettias, paperwhites, cyclamen, Norfolk pine, wintergreen and more that are perfect for colleagues, teachers and other special people in your life.

Recently, a friend told me about a small oak sapling that was planted decades ago by their parents. The tree is now providing shade and cooling at the same home today. I enjoy driving by landscape jobs that I worked on years ago and find pride and satisfaction seeing the trees doing what they were planted so long ago to do. Perhaps give a Johnson’s Garden Centers Gift Card for a tree of choice. It will provide memories for years to come.

In comparison, it has to be a pretty nice tie to still be around in 30 years!!
