Johnson's Storewide Sale Extended!

Hello, again!

A relatively new holiday, founded in 2012, National Houseplant Appreciation Day is January 10th. While it may be a ‘few’ years before it becomes an official national holiday, with government offices, banks and the like being closed in observance, it’s a good time after the holidays to show some love to our houseplants. Many of our seasonal holiday plants can be kept and enjoyed for not only a few more weeks, such as poinsettias, but for months or years, such as cyclamen, amaryllis and Christmas cactus.

As the holiday trim has been taken down and stored until next year, it’s time to freshen up our indoor living spaces. It has been shown that it is therapeutic to have plants to care for inside as well as outside. If you’ve had a bit of a challenge keeping plants indoors, let me share with you a few of the plants that I have had success with indoors, and growing tips to help as well.

Succulents and Cacti seem to do well for me as I’m not that good at keeping my plants watered as well as I should. Enjoying a sunny spot, these plants also do well outdoors on the patio during the summer months. If you have enjoyed the patio at either Wichita Brewing Company location, I’m sure you’ve seen their trough planters on the fences. We planted these and help with their easy maintenance.

Sansevieria or Snake Plant has been an easy-to-care-for houseplant for decades. Now with many new variety introductions you’ll surely find one for a low light spot in your home or office.

Pothos and Philodendron are easy to group together, though they are different plant species. They do, however, belong to the same aroid plant family, and once established in your home, they do well on a shelf where they can trail down. Also with new introductions, it's easy to find one with beautiful variegated foliage to brighten your home.

ZZ Plant or Zamioculcas zamiifolia, with its upright growth, and shiny, oval-shaped, deep green leaves, is perfect for keeping indoors. It can grow in practically any environment - whether it be low light, low humidity, or an office desk situation.

By potting your indoor plants with a well-draining media such as ferti-lome Ultimate Potting Mix or one of our specialty mixes, and making sure your container has adequate drain holes, you’ll not overwater your new plants. You can also help your houseplants thrive with the right fertilizer. Here are some of our favorite houseplant fertilizers: Houseplant Hero from ferti-lome. They also include fertilizers for specialty plants like orchids, succulents, and cactus.

Stop by the garden centers and celebrate National Houseplant Appreciation Day by receiving 50% off all tropical houseplants, cacti and succulents, now through January 12. If you have plants that need repotting, we can assist with that as well, either helping you select the perfect container and soil, or we’ll be happy to do it for you.
