Marty's late summer must-do list.
Hello, again!
Fortunately with our recent precipitation in the Wichita area, the City of Wichita water customers and their lawns are getting by pretty well with just watering one day a week. As Kansas State University advises, 1” of water per week will keep our fescue lawns doing well. Our established landscapes will do nicely with this amount of water.
There are a few things we can do in our lawns this fall, though, to help our lawns recover from any summer stress. Again resourcing KSU in their Lawn Care Guide, fall is the ideal time to fertilize your lawn. ferti-lome has formulated their Winterizer according to advice from KSU. This lawn treatment is specially formulated to protect, nourish, and strengthen grass roots during the winter months. Applied in fall, Winterizer will pay dividends in the spring when your lawn is healthier and more disease-resistant - even after a long, cold winter. Trees, shrubs, ornamental plants, and evergreens will also benefit from a fall application of Winterizer.
Adding beneficial nutrients to plants is a great way to help plants recover from the stress from our drought. Treat your lawn or garden to a natural, organic soil amendment like ferti-lome HuMic. HuMic is designed as a soil conditioner for established lawns, new grass, flower beds, and vegetable gardens. Use it on outdoor container plants or indoors on potted plants. HuMic can even be mixed with compost for an added boost of nutrients. It's everything you need to promote eco-friendly, healthy growth in your plants and lawn.
I hope you’ve saved the date of August 31 for our all NEW ChileFest at both garden centers. With food sampling, green chile demonstrations, an Iron ChileHead “garage sale” and more going on, it’s sure to be a fun and tasty day. I finally get to do Smokin’ Joe’s green chile cheeseburgers! It's a market-style event that's free to attend. Green chile lovers won't want to miss it!
Hope to see you there! Also, we’re partnering with a few of our friends in the beverage industry in town to do pop up chile roasting. Watch for upcoming dates at White Crow Cider, The Depot (Ziggy's/Walnut River Brewing Wichita), and Central Standard Brewing. It sounds like Central Standard will have a special green chile beverage for you to try - stay tuned!
