Success is where preparation and opportunity meet.
Hello, again!
It’s called the BONK. I’m not sure why, but I know when it happens. It’s hitting the wall on a long bike ride. Typically, the ride starts out well, and I’ll feel great. Then all of the sudden things seem to go south. My speed slows down dramatically. My legs and arms start to cramp. I know if I get off of the bike, it’ll be difficult to get going again. When I think back and try to see why the BONK happened, it always goes back to nutrition. The issue is usually that I didn’t consume enough calories both before and during the ride. Nor have I hydrated properly, and my electrolytes have been depleted. That is never good.
On most anything we do, it’s all in the preparation. I know when I plan ahead of a long ride, things go well; I perform well and feel good during and after the event. Our plants are the same way. When we properly plan and execute, the plants do well all season long.
Our landscape plants benefit from proper feeding before the season, and from proper nutrition and hydration during the season. It’s not just water that is needed, but ‘electrolytes’ as well. I’ll refer to minor nutrients in fertilizers as ‘plant electrolytes’.
This is my nutrition plan for plants in my landscape:
I start off with an application of ferti-lome Tree & Shrub Food before the season starts. Just like that pre-event meal, an application at the start of the season is available for the plant as it is actively growing in the spring and summer months. Tree & Shrub Food contains a 19-8-10 feeding as well as trace elements sulfur, boron, copper, iron manganese and zinc. As a granular fertilizer, it goes down fast in a fertilizer spreader under the drip line of trees and shrubs. With a wetting agent, it moves easily to the root zone.
As an insect prevention, ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Insect Drench will control many insects all season long on ornamental plants (just not on edible plants.)
