There are good bugs, bad bugs... and then there are mosquitoes.
Hello, again!
Coulter is good about reminding me about his monthly pill for flea, tick and heartworm prevention. Not really; he isn’t too fond of it at all! Being out in an area where ticks have been found recently, I was reminded of how important it is to do what we can with the tools available to us to protect our pets and ourselves. Coulter should be good with his monthly ‘treat’. The landscape is another story.
I'm starting to see mosquitoes around here, so it's time to do what we can to help prevent them. With products available to us to safely prevent and repel mosquitoes, we are able to easily enjoy our surroundings.
First of all, prevent breeding areas where the larvae hatch by reducing standing water. This will reduce the population of mosquitoes.
For standing water that isn’t avoidable, such as in a bird bath or water garden, I use Mosquito Dunks which are formulated with BTI, a bacteria that's toxic to only mosquito larvae. It’s safe for other wildlife, pets, fish, and humans. Dunks kill larvae within hours, and last for up to 30 days.
When you want to repel adult mosquitoes without harming beneficial insects like bees, butterflies, and ladybugs - you want MosquitoGo Granules from ferti-lome. It's also safe around kids and pets! MosquitoGo create an irritant scent barrier using natural cedar oil. MosquitoGo also repels ants, fleas, roaches, beetles, crickets, chiggers, chinch bugs, flies and gnats.
To keep mosquitoes from joining the party, I’ll apply it the day before in the areas I plan to hang out. I have also used Bonide Mosquito Beater Granules to repel mosquitoes for up to 3 weeks. Mosquito Beater is non-toxic and biodegradable. Its pleasant scent comes from citronella oil, garlic, geranium oil, cedar wood oil, and lemongrass oil. I especially like its easy-to-use shaker applicator.
It’s starting to get hot, but the days are still enjoyable outside, minus pests like ticks and mosquitoes. Don’t let them keep you from enjoying time outdoors. If you have any questions about insect prevention, just ask!

P.S. It's just 10 days away now! I hope you’ll follow me and my friends this summer as we take off again from Banff down the Divide on June 14. We are raising money for Wichita’s HumanKind Ministries.
